How many lies do you believe on a daily basis? Ten? Twenty? One hundred?
As Christians, we so often blame the media for the evil messages being spread around the world. Are you feeling insecure? It’s probably because of the unrealistic expectations set by models in magazines. Are you feeling inadequate? That’s because the world
puts too much pressure to achieve and be something. And the list goes on.
The other day I was thinking about all the lies we are prone to believe. There are so, so many. And when we believe these lies, we so easily fall into sin. Think about it… what causes the sin of worry? Believing the lies that God cannot provide, that He is not sovereign, that He will not work everything together for your good. That’s just one sin, and look at all the lies that cause it.
And then I began to contemplate the verse in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Think about that for a minute.
Who’s the real liar here? Is it really the media? Society? Culture? Other people? Yourself? All of that falls under the category of “flesh and blood.” Our battle is not against all of this… it’s against our spiritual enemy, the one who roams about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Yes, media and culture and all that stuff can certainly feed our propensity to believe these lies. But the people behind those magazines and television shows and books and cultural norms have been deceived by the real Liar–Satan. He is known as our enemy for a reason.
It can be so helpful to get a clear focus on just where these lies are coming from, which makes it easier to utterly discard them. Think about Romans 8:33-34, “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one.” No one can bring any charge, any lie, anything at all against us as believers in Jesus Christ. Those lies are from the enemy. That is where the battle lies.
So stand strong! We have been given a great weapon to fight against these lies, “the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16). We have not been left alone in our fight against the enemy’s lies.
