It Is Well

Today I want to share what has become one of my favorite songs over the past few weeks. I’ve heard it on the radio and in the background when we’re playing music around the house. It’s one of those worship songs where they repeat the same three phrases over and over and over… and over………….. and over again. Sometimes, these songs get old. But this one is so beautiful.

The words to this song are beautiful, and speak so perfectly about where our peace comes from as Christians. It says, “Through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You, and it is well with me.” And, as our eyes are on Him, we say to ourselves, “So let go my soul and trust in Him, the waves and wind still know His name.” Isn’t that beautiful? A wonderful reminder of this God that still controls the wind and waves, this who God is in control, and how completely we can trust Him.

This song is one of many songs, books, article, stories, and videos that God has used and is using to teach me the lesson that I’ve been having trouble learning for a long time. The lesson of letting go of control, making Him the most important thing, taking to heart my identity in Christ, and just resting in that love He has for me.

And then, what does all of this produce? The ability to sing the words, “It is well with my soul.” Remember how I said at the beginning of this post that they tend to repeat the same words over and over? Well take a look at part of the lyrics of this song:

It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well, with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well, with my soul
It is well, it is well, with my soul
It is well, it is well, with my soul

That looks like a lot, right? Originally, I was going to take that part out, and just summarize it. But as I looked at these words that I’ve copied and pasted into this post, I realized that it’s actually quite powerful. All those things—giving God control and trusting in His love and resting in the security of that—all of this makes it so that it is well with our souls. And the repetition of that phrase goes to show just how well it is with our souls.

I pray that God will teach me this. Scratch that—I thank God for teaching me this over and over and over. I pray that I will learn this lesson. And I pray that each of you will learn this lesson too.

This lesson that it is so well with our souls, because the blood of Jesus has paid the price so very perfectly, and it has set us free from the power of sin and death and guilt and shame, and now we can rest in the love that will never let us go, the everlasting arms that hold us, and the Savior who is faithful to finish what He has started.

Oh, to learn the lesson that because of Jesus, it truly is well with me.
